There are 3 options:
Getting to Drake Bay from San José can be a little bit challenging , but there are several options available to suit different budgets, schedules, and preferences. Here are some alternatives:
- By Plane (the fastest option)
- Duration: Approximately 1 hour.
- Details:
- From Juan Santamaría International Airport, take a local flight with airlines like Sansa Airlines or Aerobell (https://www.flysansa.com/) to Drake Bay Airport.
- Once in Drake Bay, many accommodations offer transportation from the airport to your lodging.
- By Car or Bus + Boat (the most common and reliable option)
Step 1: Getting to Sierpe
- By Bus:
- The Tracopa bus company (https://www.tracopacr.com/Rutas_Horarios) offers service from San José to Palmar Norte.
- From Palmar Norte, take a local bus or taxi to Sierpe (approximately 30-40 minutes).
- Total duration: Around 6-7 hours.
- By Car:
- Drive from San José to Sierpe (4-5 hours).
- Once in Sierpe, park your car in a safe location. Recommended options:
- Don Jorge Restaurant Parking.
- Las Vegas Restaurant Parking.
- Both are secure, affordable, and close to the dock.
Step 2: Taking a Boat from Sierpe to Drake Bay
- Departure times:
- From Sierpe: 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
- From Drake Bay: 7:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
- Cost: $20 USD per person, per trip.
- Duration: Approximately 1 hour.
- Reservations: No need to book in advance, but arrive early to purchase your ticket.
- Departure point: Boats leave from the dock at Don Jorge Restaurant.
- Driving Directly to Drake Bay
Driving directly to Drake Bay is a possible option, especially for those seeking independence and adventure.
Details of the Journey:
- Duration: 6-8 hours from San José, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Vehicle Requirements: A 4×4 vehicle or a high-clearance car is essential, as the roads can be challenging in certain sections.
The weather can change unexpectedly, making it unpredictable.
We are in the tropical rainforest, so it usually rains in the afternoons and is sunny in the morning.
NO, we do not have banks or ATMs, so we recommend you bring enough cash to pay for tours.
Yes, we have a supermarket with a variety in the area.
Yes, there are public and private medical services.

A Magical Experience with a Expert Guide! – My dad and I booked a 2 day 1 night trip to Sirena station. My dad unfortunately fell ill the day we were due to go and was not able… read more to attend. They were extremely accomodating to our situation, deducting 50% of his ticket fee even after such short notice which we were very grateful for.
The tour itself was a magical experience, Steven is super knowledgeable and intune with the surrounding nature. With 20+ years experience in his craft, he knew all the animal species, flaura and fauna + their medical value, and the symbiotic relationship between the inhabitants of the forest, you can certainly see see his passion for his job.
During the trip, we were able to see 3 of the 4 species of monkey, The Norther Tamandua, Peccary, Red brocket deer, Three toad sloth, an Agouti, bats, many species of bird, amphibians and reptiles, and more! We even got up close to Tapirs, Coatis, and a juvenile squirrel monkey! Steven explained to us the different adaptations each species of animal, and plant has to thrive in the jungle.
I cannot recommend this experience enough, it would not have been the same without Steven, and I am so thankful to have shared this experience with the group.

Quite the jungle stroll! – The preliminary sensations of arriving at Corcovado National Park is intense. We spent much time in many different parks but this park had a lot of hype and reputation for… read more being one of the best old growth tropical forests still remaining on the pacific coast! Needless to say we were excited!
We joined the rest of the group in Drake bay at 615 am, enjoyed a 45 min boat ride at 25-35 knots cruising along the coast to Sirena lodge.
It just a short 3 hour stroll through the jungle along the Rio claro trail we encountered an unrivaled amount of species. Spider monkeys, ant-eater, mecos monkeys, a 3-toed sloth and baby, curacawo birds, egrets, Hurons, many different lizards and birds species. Then on the next part of the trail we had a resting tapir, boa constrictor, a beautiful display of leaf cutter ants, soldier ants, many different butterflies and spider species. Honestly, too much to name and remember just a few hours later. Our guide, Steven was incredible! Just so our speed with life, philosophy, perspective, knowledge, and realism. I’m a professional guide back in California and Steven is very personable and incredibly knowledgeable about all the flora and fauna. Not only that. He has a utmost respect for his coworkers- the animals. He respects there space first, I saw other groups with their guide getting too close to suspects and causing potential stress..which we should all avoid in these rare and special places. Much love and respect to our guide Steven! I hope we have the pleasure and luck to join him on another excursion in the future! Pura vida!!

Recommendation – Highly recommended! Steven is an excellent guide! Very knowledgeable, knows how to imitate animal sounds and also knows medicinal plants of the local culture. He also does everything with a… read more smile and joy. We loved him so much that we took him on two trips – one at Sirena Station, and one at night in Drake Bay. Simply an excellent guide!

Amazing experience and amazing guide – In December 2022, we went an a 3 day tour (Sirena & San Pedrillo/Corcovado backyard) with Steve / Osa Outdoors as our guide. These 3 days were, without doubt, the… read more highlight of our 1 month trip to Costa Rica. The park is simply beautifull with an abundance of wildlife, diversity of nature and cool trails. Both overnights are comfortable and meals are very good. But the most important part of this experience was that the guide Steve is nice guy, knowledgeable and very passionated about the wildlife, nature, how both interact with each other and what our role is in nature. I would really recommend booking your trip with Steve/Osa outdoors.

Simply Incredible – We did a private day tour to Corcovado National Park. Steven was great and prompt from the word go. He gave us Gustavo as our guide since Steven was… read more with overnight group. It turned out our one of the best wildlife experiences. Can’t thank enough to Gustavo. He was out there to give us the best experience and always went out of his way. He was too good to spot animals and birds. We saw tapirs, 3 types of monkeys, peckaries, sloth, anteater, toucans, scarlet macaws, woodpeckers, three different types of turkeys. On top of it, we saw Barba Amarilla (Fer de lance). It was on eof the best tours we had. Can’t praise and than enpugh to Gustavo and Steven,
